FAQs about Dyslexia Assessments

How long does a dyslexia assessment take?

A full diagnostic assessment takes between 3 - 4 hours depending on the individual being assessed. This may be split into two sessions depending on the needs of the learner being assessed and is recommended for individuals with concentration difficulties.

Where does the assessment take place?

Assessments can take place at Amy's place of residence in Knowle, or an educational setting at the request of the school or university.

What is a dyslexia
assessment?

A series of short tests are conducted to establish learning and cognition abilities in language, processing, memory, reasoning and literacy. Data from these tests is used to prepare a comprehensive, personalised written report that can be used to signpost the individual, family, school and universities to support relevant recommendations.

What are the benefits of an assessment?

How can a dyslexia assessment support access to accommodations and funding?

Clear explanations within the report help the individual understand the reasons behind their difficulties, linking patterns of strengths and challenges to how they learn best. Seeing their performance in context can reduce confusion and provide a more accurate, balanced picture of their abilities. For parents, this shared understanding can make it easier to support learning at home and communicate effectively with school or college.

Moreover, this insight often supports the development of self-awareness, helping the individual recognise both their strengths and areas of need. This can lead to increased confidence and a more positive sense of self, as difficulties are understood rather than internalised.

Reference to standard scores in a detailed score table within the report, means the individual's performance can be compared to other learners of the same age. The report may be used to cross-reference up-to-date eligibility criteria set by JCQ for exam access arrangements, as appropriate. The report may also be used to support future applications for Disabled Students’ Allowance, as appropriate.
